U4GM Guide to Diablo 4 War Plans Unlock Order

Early gold farming in Diablo 4 can feel inefficient when your first War Plans unlocks support activities you were never planning to run. The problem is usually not a lack of places to spend time, but committing resources before confirming what the live tooltips actually do. PTR notes can help you prepare, and browsing Diablo IV Items may clarify which upgrades deserve priority, but the live War Plans screen should decide your route.

Confirm the live War Plans details first

War Plans information shown during testing may not match the seasonal version. Names, reward values, and requirements can change, so treat any early notes as a planning aid rather than a guarantee. Scent of Gold is especially worth checking carefully because its connected rewards may involve gold, experience, Horadric Cube materials, or Gem Fragments. Do not assign a node to your route until its current tooltip confirms the effect.

The artwork is not enough to identify a node. An icon can remain familiar while its function changes, and an incomplete note can lead you toward the wrong activity. Write the exact node name and its position on the board, then separate confirmed information from anything remembered from testing. A small route card outside the game is more useful than trying to reconstruct the board after several unlocks.

Use a short verification routine before spending your opening resources.

Record the exact name of every gold or experience node you intend to use. Mark whether each node belongs to the main route or an optional branch. Note the activity connected to each reward instead of assuming it applies everywhere. Leave space for material rewards that appear in the current tooltip.

This record prevents a common early mistake: treating a promising reward as universal when it only supports one part of your schedule. It also gives you a clean reference if the board contains several similar-looking choices.

Choose nodes around the content you will actually run

A reward tied to Helltide has practical value when Helltide is already part of your plan. It contributes much less if most of your session will be spent in the Pit. Apply the same test to Infernal Hordes and any other activity named by the node. The best route is not automatically the one with the largest displayed reward; it is the one that improves the content you can run consistently.

For the first week, pair your first three gold-focused unlocks with the activities they support. Before selecting them, answer four questions.

Which supported activity fits your current build without major changes Can you reach the node without delaying a more useful requirement Will the reward matter during the session you have planned Are you spending resources on a branch that only helps a future setup

Party play does not remove the need for individual planning. Each player should inspect personal War Plans progress, since one person's route does not unlock nodes for everyone else. A shared schedule can coordinate activities, but it should not be mistaken for shared board advancement.

Measure the route before changing your build

Once the live board is clear, take the first two route nodes only if your available resources support them. Run the matching activity for a defined block, then compare your starting and ending gold. Subtract purchases, crafting costs, and other spending before estimating the result. This will not produce a perfect economic model, but it can reveal whether the route is helping or merely adding preparation time.

If the result feels weak, test another activity supported by your unlocked nodes before rebuilding your character. A change in route may solve the problem more cheaply than replacing gear or skills. Keep notes on materials as well as gold, because a route that produces less currency may still be useful when its tooltip supports an upgrade goal.

Keep early gold focused on progression

Cosmetic unlocks are easier to delay than Tempering and masterworking expenses. Reserve part of your earnings for the gear you are committed to improving, and avoid repeated speculative weapon rolls until the build has a clearer direction. After your first Spark craft, review the budget again, since the item you choose may change which upgrades deserve the next share of your gold.

Keep Horadric set planning and Tyrael Boons notes separate from this route card. Confirm the live node names, connect them to activities you genuinely intend to play, and measure the result before expanding the route. If outside purchases become part of your plan, compare D4 items for sale with the gold and upgrade priorities you have already established.
